Diy Shelves For Storage Bins

Five Easy Steps In Installing DIY Shelves For The Storage Bins In Your Cabinet

Sometimes, the cabinets sold in home centers do not meet your storage preferences. Or sometimes, an old cabinet needs fixing up to meet your storage needs. And so you plan to augment your cabinet's storage capacity by installing shelves that can hold storage bins.

Due to the fact that a good handyman is hard to find these days and the good ones almost always charge a fortune for their services, you decide to install the shelves yourself. Well, DIY projects like this have nothing to do with good fortune; rather, it is more about common sense and a lot of imagination. And the results, if successful, can be a great source of satisfaction and, thus, very addictive.

So here are five simplified steps in setting up shelves for the storage bins in your cabinet:

1. Clean The Cabinet

The first step in making shelves for storage bins in your cabinet is to take out everything that is inside and then make sure that the interior surfaces of the cabinet is clean of dust and other particles.

If the interior cabinet walls are not smooth, use a sanding machine to finely remove surface irregularities. Also, you must pry out protruding nails and seal all holes if there are any.

2. Measure The Cabinet And Shelves To Be Installed

After you have cleaned and patched up your cabinet, you are now in a better position to take its measurements. By now you must already have an idea where to attach the shelves in the cabinet.

After measuring the cabinet, determine the width, length and thickness of the shelves that you plan to install. You can draw the details on a piece of paper so that you will have a rough guide as to how you want your finished project to look like. If possible, take a photo of your cabinet.

3. Buy The Materials Needed

After taking the measurements and putting a rough plan on a piece of paper, you are now ready for the trip to the home improvement store. The easiest way of buying the materials for this project is to show the photo and the rough plan you have to the home center salesperson. With these in hand, the sales assistant will know what to recommend for your DIY project; for instance, paint color, size of the shelf brackets, and of course the matching storage bins if you still do not have them.

If you are a true blue do-it-yourselfer, you can shop around for the materials all by yourself. But you still need to show the photo to the salesperson so that the right paint color can be made for you.

4. Install The Shelf Supports And Apply The Paint

Now that you are back from the home center, you can start to install the shelf brackets. Mark the points on which you will attach the brackets. Make sure that the shelf supports are leveled; otherwise your shelves will be unstable. You can always ask for someone to hold the brackets while you fasten them into place with screws.

Paint the cabinet interior and the shelves with matching colors and let dry in room temperature.

5. Put On The Shelves And Storage Bins

After you install the supporting brackets and when the paint has dried, the next thing you need to do is slip the shelves on top of the brackets. Once the shelves are in place and secured by stoppers or held on by fasteners, you can place the storage bins on top of the shelves and you are done.

How to Remove Odors From Plastic Storage Containers?

By Joven Villanueva
First step is to empty the storage container from any food particles. Wash the container with hot water and dish soap first. Make sure you wash the lid as well. Dry it with a clean towel. Crumple a piece of newspaper and put it into the container while putting the lid tight through it. Allow the plastic container to sit overnight without opening it. The logic behind the step is to allow the newspaper to absorb the odors within the plastic container. Wash the container again with water and dish soap after getting rid of the newspaper. If the odor is gone, then it is a good job. If not, you have to proceed to the next step.
